For many years, I have been observing a pair of common kestrels nesting just a stone's throw from my home. Every year, in March or April, the female lays her eggs in one of the cavities of a wall in an old coaching inn. This imposing stone building overlooking vast fields, with its watering trough, its Gallo-Roman fountain, its barn, and its half-ruined old bread oven, offers an ideal place for them to breed.

When there are many hatchlings, it often happens that one of the chicks falls from the nest. This does not have a major impact on its survival, as the parents continue to come and feed it on the ground. Furthermore, there are enough hiding places on the ground for it to hope to easily evade any potential predator's approach.

It was while visiting the brood that I came across this little one that had fallen from the nest. Just two meters apart, we stood observing each other. Then, very gently, without any sudden movements, I took out my camera to capture the moment. It was only after a very long time that it decided to go and take refuge in the depths of the ruin, amidst the brambles. An unforgettable moment, the kind only nature can offer us.

I was able to watch this little one grow, to see it make its first attempts at flight, magnificent and free.
