Birds - L'Etang aux cygnes
"Dare Dare! Quick analysis of a work of art :
"This painting has a story. It was springtime. Being the proud owner of a German Pointer, Tchuck, I had been invited to exhibit some paintings during a weekend at the World Championship of the breed in the region of Reims. The weather was cold, rainy and windy. A gust of wind a little more violent than the others made the tent that should have been my shelter fly away in the air. I gave up showing my work. I took advantage of this free time to admire the dogs. Some of them looked like two drops of water to Tchuck. Others were more massive. All the owners, who sometimes came from far away, were proud to show the respective qualities of their companion. The weather continued to be terrible until the evening.
The next day, the dogs had to compete on the field. In the morning, each dog had to chase a duck in a pond. At dawn, we found ourselves in the countryside. At the end of a path, a mist caressed the water that the rising sun was warming up little by little. All around the water, the vegetation was luxuriant and reflected on the surface covered by duckweed. My attention was attracted by a couple of swans that had certainly chosen this place to nest. They were gliding quietly on this greenish expanse. In front of all the agitation that the dogs and our troop made, they went to take refuge well out of reach of the glances. One after the other, the dogs went after the ducks. The swans had definitely disappeared.
I took a single photograph of the couple. Many months later, I decided to paint the scene. It took me almost a year of work to get all the shades of green onto the canvas. I had worked with very few colors so I had to use white and black to create all the possible palettes.
A year after I did it, I submitted this painting along with four others to the Society of Animal Artists in New York. Not only did it allow me to become a member, but it was selected to participate in the annual exhibition of the association: "Art and the Animal". Laurence Saunois
