Nympheus Luminansis, The Road to LIGHT

CURRENTLY ON DISPLAY
Nympheus Luminansis, Water Lilies of Light, is a series of paintings paying tribute to Claude Monet's famous water garden and his water lilies, the result of eight years of research and creation. Presented in an international museum exhibition, it invites viewers to explore the heart of color and light.
“In each painting, shapes and silhouettes can reveal themselves to the viewer depending on their perception, creating a unique dialogue with the work. This phenomenon, known as pareidolia, adds a poetic and playful dimension to the contemplation of colors and textures.” Laurence Saunois
Behind the scene

In this artwork, the artist deliberately chose a composition in which the water lilies seem to rise upward to the right of the canvas, like the cobblestones of a road leading toward the light. The golden reflections of the trees frame this passage, reinforcing the impression of a path traced in the heart of the water. The water lilies seem to be resting on the sky, where evanescent, light, and delicate clouds appear elusive. The viewer wonders: is there really an up and a down, a specific direction? Or is it all just an illusion?
Beyond the representation of nature, The Path of Light invites reflection on the human condition. The path of the water lilies becomes a metaphor for the inner journey that each of us takes throughout our lives. Some follow a clear path that seems to be all mapped out, while others stray, hesitate, turn back, and then continue on another road. Certainties can give way to uncertainty, and vice versa.
This painting thus questions our relationship to time and existence: what is real and what is only appearance? What guides our steps: the search for meaning, the natural movement that pushes us forward, or the desire for a happy and fulfilling existence? The water lilies floating on this imaginary road remind us that life is made up of transitions, impulses and fragilities, happiness and sorrow.
Through Le chemin de la lumière, Laurence Saunois offers an artwork that goes beyond aesthetic contemplation to become a universal reflection on the path that each of us takes, between fragile certainties and fruitful doubts.

MATERIALS USED
Canvases: I used canvases from Matertoiles to create the paintings in the Nympheus Luminansis series.
Oil paint: To achieve such vibrant colors, I worked with Schaal brand oil paints. Made by a master colorist in the purest tradition using linseed or walnut oils, they are very rich in pigments and enhance every brushstroke.
