Nympheus Luminansis, LIKE A CURTAIN OF LIGHT

CURRENTLY ON DISPLAY
Nympheus Luminansis, Water Lilies of Light, is a series of paintings paying tribute to Claude Monet's famous water garden and his water lilies, the result of eight years of research and creation. Presented in an international museum exhibition, it invites viewers to explore the heart of color and light.
“In each painting, shapes and silhouettes can reveal themselves to the viewer depending on their perception, creating a unique dialogue with the work. This phenomenon, known as pareidolia, adds a poetic and playful dimension to the contemplation of colors and textures.” Laurence Saunois
Behind the scene

The composition of this artwork is almost theatrical. The reflections of the weeping willow occupy a large part of the canvas: bright and imposing, they form a curtain ready to open onto a representation of life. Behind this vegetal curtain, numerous colorful water lilies appear, symbolizing the diversity and richness of life.
It is the only painting in the series that refers to the riverbank, visible in the upper right corner. This detail acts as an anchor, a visual reference point that prevents the viewer from getting lost in the immensity of the reflections. Without this reference point, the whole could become confusing, as the water transforms the space and makes it uncertain what belongs to the sky and what belongs to the earth.
In contrast, the mirror of water can be glimpsed, providing a calmer counterpoint to the verticality of the willow. On this surface, a red leaf that has just fallen causes a discreet ripple. This small movement enlivens the scene, like a breath of life that reminds us of the fragility of moments and the continuity of natural cycles.
Through Tel un rideau de lumière, Laurence Saunois presents an artwork that plays on the boundary between illusion and reality, reference points and loss of reference points, immobility and movement. She invites the viewer to step through this curtain of light to contemplate the richness of the world, made up of diversity, change, and constant renewal.

MATERIALS USED
Canvases: I used canvases from Matertoiles to create the paintings in the Nympheus Luminansis series.
Oil paint: To achieve such vibrant colors, I worked with Schaal brand oil paints. Made by a master colorist in the purest tradition using linseed or walnut oils, they are very rich in pigments and enhance every brushstroke.
