Nympheus Luminansis, light in the shade of the weeping willow

CURRENTLY ON DISPLAY
Nympheus Luminansis, Water Lilies of Light, is a series of paintings paying tribute to Claude Monet's famous water garden and his water lilies, the result of eight years of research and creation. Presented in an international museum exhibition, it invites viewers to explore the heart of color and light.
“In each painting, shapes and silhouettes can reveal themselves to the viewer depending on their perception, creating a unique dialogue with the work. This phenomenon, known as pareidolia, adds a poetic and playful dimension to the contemplation of colors and textures.” Laurence Saunois
Behind the scene

In this painting, the artist highlights the reflections of a tree with golden foliage, whose multiple shades of yellow illuminate the scene. The chromatic palette of the reflections ranges from green to red, contrasting with the water lily leaves resting on the surface of the water and imbued with the soft hues of the sky, rendered in pastel shades.
A few leaves stand proudly, adding volume and rhythm to the composition. It is in one of these leaves that the artist has hidden the shape of a heart. You have to look for it, just as we sometimes look for what lies behind appearances. This discreet detail reminds us that when it comes to feelings, human beings sometimes keep them hidden.
This barely perceptible heart acts as a visual metaphor: it is not revealed at first glance, but only to those who take the time to observe. Thus, the artwork becomes an echo of inner life, where the deepest emotions sometimes remain buried out of fear or modesty. Just as water reflects the surrounding light and colors, human beings reveal part of what they experience and keep invisible feelings within themselves.
La lumière est d'or therefore invites patient contemplation. It reminds us that emotions, like light, reveal themselves gently to those who are willing to take the time and who, in their subtlety, escape haste. Through this artwork, Laurence Saunois offers a reflection on what is visible and what remains hidden, on the beauty of discreet details and on the need to look beyond the surface to perceive what a hurried eye will never see.

MATERIALS USED
Canvases: I used canvases from Matertoiles to create the paintings in the Nympheus Luminansis series.
Oil paint: To achieve such vibrant colors, I worked with Schaal brand oil paints. Made by a master colorist in the purest tradition using linseed or walnut oils, they are very rich in pigments and enhance every brushstroke.
