Le Viguier du Roy in Figeac is a historic treasure that has been brought back to life as a 4-star hotel. Here's its fascinating story:
For over seven centuries, the Château du Viguier du Roy has watched over the medieval quarter of the Occitan town of Figeac. This historic monument was once a symbol of royal power. Between 1990 and 2008, it had already been transformed into a hotel, but then sold to become a private residence.
Fortunately, lovers of old stones saved this heritage gem. Bought by the Grand Figeac local authority, the buildings, the oldest of which date back to the 12th century, were entrusted to the Cité-Hôtels group. The latter operates other architectural nuggets in the Occitanie region, such as the Hôtel de la Cité in Carcassonne and the Hôtel des Consuls in Toulouse.
Today, the Hôtel Mercure Viguier du Roy unveils its 5,000 m² of disparate buildings, including courtyards, patios, small formal gardens, terraces, stone staircases, a cloister and an 18th-century wing. Inside, the journey back in time continues with an ancient patina and a contemporary touch. Interior designer Chantal Peyrat dotted the walls with nods to graphic codes, from hieroglyphs to tags to calligraphy.
