Birds - Moineau dans la neige
"Dare Dare! Quick analysis of a work of art :
"Every winter, the sparrows that nest in the cavities of the dry stone wall of the house, regularly take refuge in the wild clematis that climbs right next to it. During the bad season, they devour the seeds of the plant without having to worry about possible predators because at the slightest alert, they can take refuge in this climber with inextricable lianas of several meters high.
I thought of the composition of my future painting by imagining a sparrow on an early winter morning, its plumage inflated, warming up thanks to the first rays of the rising sun. I wanted snow, ice drops and a beautiful light. And of course a bird correctly placed in the composition.
During the many hours I spent observing the colony, I was able to understand a little better their different behaviors. I knew where they took refuge in case of danger, where they rested and where they fed. This helped me to better visualize the image I had in mind.

I had to wait three winters, to finally get all the conditions necessary for a correct shooting. And still, more days of stalking were necessary so that the male sparrow is placed exactly where I had planned it. The painting was done in the following weeks on a smooth surface in order to bring out all the details of the snow. I did not paint all the vines of the clematis in order to lighten the composition and to emphasize certain points of the painting". Laurence Saunois
Zoom on the realization of the feathers in painting: Which palette of colors?
Laurence Saunois is a wildlife painter who uses a fairly small color palette to paint the feathers of the birds in her paintings. Unless you are painting island birds with shimmering colors, a fairly small color palette is sufficient to paint the feathers of a country bird. This is not to say that there is no difficulty in setting up the various shades. Some plumages are real challenges for a painter. In these cases, the artist makes the feathers of the bird one by one. Then, once finished, she takes everything back in its entirety to adjust the contrasts and colors.
