Nympheus Luminansis, Celestial Lights

CURRENTLY ON DISPLAY
Nympheus Luminansis, Water Lilies of Light, is a series of paintings paying tribute to Claude Monet's famous water garden and his water lilies, the result of eight years of research and creation. Presented in an international museum exhibition, it invites viewers to explore the heart of color and light.
“In each painting, shapes and silhouettes can reveal themselves to the viewer depending on their perception, creating a unique dialogue with the work. This phenomenon, known as pareidolia, adds a poetic and playful dimension to the contemplation of colors and textures.” Laurence Saunois
Behind the scene

In this painting, the artist has chosen to place a few water lilies on the surface of dark, deliberately bare water. Clouds are reflected on this almost mysterious depth, like an ephemeral veil. Their presence lightens the composition and introduces a visual breath of fresh air, contrasting with the opacity of the water.
The canvas invites us to contemplate a fragile boundary: that between the sky and the Earth. The cloud reflections merge with the surface of the pond, abolishing the usual landmarks and blurring the line between the real and the immaterial. This impression is reinforced by the contrast between dark areas and flashes of light, which give the painting a subtle tension that is both peaceful and unsettling.
Lumières célestes highlights the thin separation between light and darkness, between fleeting clarity and persistent gloom. The water lilies, discreet but ever-present, become anchor points, as if nature were resisting the erasure of the landscape. They remind us of the permanence of life, even in a world dominated by uncertainty.
With this artwork, Laurence Saunois highlights a certain duality, as exists in existence and in the resonance of feelings. Lumières célestes does not merely represent a pond of water lilies: it offers a visual reflection on passage, transition, and the shifting boundary between two worlds, where light becomes both fragile and essential.

MATERIALS USED
Canvases: I used canvases from Matertoiles to create the paintings in the Nympheus Luminansis series.
Oil paint: To achieve such vibrant colors, I worked with Schaal brand oil paints. Made by a master colorist in the purest tradition using linseed or walnut oils, they are very rich in pigments and enhance every brushstroke.
